Dark Circles - Causes & Home Remedies by Zyba Salons

We’re all human and life can get difficult every once in a while but that’s just how it is. The stress and exhaustion from hectic schedules shows the fastest on our skin. But that doesn’t mean we can’t fix it!

Let’s first understand what actually causes Dark Circles. They are caused when blood vessels show up through the fragile layer of skin around your eyes. They tend to make your face  look dull and tired but may or may not be permanent in nature. While most people believe that lack of sleep is the most common cause of this skin concern there are several other factors that play an important role.

  1. Iron Deficiency is a very common condition among women in India and often shows up as dark circles.

  2. Stress and Fatigue causes skin to turn pale which results in dark circles becoming more prominent as the blood under the skin around the eyes appears more blue.

  3. Lack of fluids and hydration in the skin and body Dehydration is also known to accelerate the skin aging process where people tend to lose collagen.

  4. Prolonged exposure to the straining blue light rays from screens and devices can also cause dark circles.

  5. Year round or seasonal allergies may also sometimes trigger the release of histamines which causes an inflammatory response in our blood vessels.

Some Easy Home Remedies:

  1. Tea Bag Cold Compress: The caffeine in tea improves blood circulation under the eyes. Soak two tea bags in water for 3 to 4 minutes and allow them to cool down in a refrigerator for around 30 to 40 minutes. Place these bags as a cold compress on your eyes for 15 minutes.

  2. Almond Oil: Massaging Almond Oil under your eyes every night improves blood circulation. It contains Retinol, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K which gently nourishes and smoothes out the delicate skin under the eyes.

  3. Cucumber or Rose Water: It may sound cliche but both Cucumber and Rose Water do have mild astringent properties that can help fix dark circles.

  4. Dark Chocolate (here is an excuse to indulge! ;)): Flavonol rich foods like dark chocolate protect the skin against sun damage, thereby slowing down the skin aging process. Maybe there is some good in all those calories Chocolate has?
