What is Bleaching: Pros, Cons, Benefits, and Precautions by Zyba Salons

Be it that peach fuzz on your face or those unruly sideburns, Bleaching is one of the most common methods used to deal with facial hair! 

There are two types of Bleaching agents: Chemical and Natural. 

Chemical Bleaching Agents

The primary component of Chemical Bleach is Hydrogen Peroxide. This Bleaching agent lightens your facial hair, and makes your face appear brighter however, Hydrogen Peroxide does not lighten your skin.

Bleaching products are available as over the counter soaps and creams or with bleach as a primary ingredient in brightening and de-tan facials and Bleaching Kits. 

Natural Bleaching Agents:

Here are some DIY bleaching agents you can make at home with some easily available ingredients:

  1. Mix one 1 tablespoon of Neem Powder, 1 tablespoon of Sandalwood Powder, 5 drops of an astringent like Apple Cider Vinegar with rose water into a lump free paste. Apply this mixture on your face and neck, and rinse it off after 35 minutes with room temperature water.

  2. Potato and Tomatoes are natural bleaching agents. Applying raw tomato or grated potato paste onto your face helps in reducing acne scars and blemishes whole enhancing skin tone.

  3. Mix 2 tablespoons of Rice Flour with equal quantities of cold Milk and apply it on your face and neck. Rinse it off with cold water after leaving it on for 25 minutes.

  4. Mix 1 tablespoon of Yogurt with ½ tablespoon of Turmeric Powder and ½ tablespoon of Honey. Apply this mixture to your face and neck, and rinse it off after 30 minutes.

Pros of Bleaching:

  1. Bleaching evens out skin tone and gives the skin a soft golden glow.

  2. Bleaching evens out skin tone thereby minimising the appearance of pigmentation, blemishes, and scars.

  3. Bleaching products are available in affordable as well as expensive variants.

  4. Bleaching improves overall skin texture.

  5. Bleaching helps in tan removal.

  6. Bleaching comes in handy as a painless method for concealing dark and unwanted facial hair. 

Cons of Bleaching:

  1. If mixed in incorrect proportions, Bleaching can cause side effects like skin redness, rashes and irritation.

  2. Bleaching makes the skin hypersensitive to sunlight.

  3. It may cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin.

  4. Bleach may cause the skin to burn if mixed in incorrect or extra strong proportions.

  5. Bleaching may not suit everybody and lead to skin inflammation and acne.

Some Precautions to take Before And After Bleaching:

  1. Consult a dermatologist before opting for any beauty treatments if you have any severe skin concerns or medical issues.

  2. Avoid sunbathing during or after bleaching because Bleach makes your skin hypersensitive to sunlight.

  3. Never skip sunscreen while going out and opt for a minimum of SPF 15.

  4. It is advisable to apply Bleach during the evening if possible to avoid sun exposure after the process.

  5. Always mix your Bleach in a glass bowl and apply it only on a thoroughly cleansed face.

  6. After Bleaching avoid applying anything or washing your face with hot water.

  7. Always do a patch test in an inconspicuous area 24 hours prior to using a Bleaching Products.

  8. Always hydrate the Bleached area by applying a calming gel based moisturiser.

It is always advisable to visit a salon or get a professional to do beauty treatments that require Bleaching as they can be a better judge of what strength and quantity of Bleach will work best for your skin type!
